Mike Murad Gone

Ten months ago, I posted a blog post about the fickleness of broadcast management when it comes to who they have sitting in the anchor chair.  At the time, the sacrifice du joir was former KOIN morning anchor Chad Carter.  Mr. Carter’s chair was still warm when they brought in Mike Murad.  Mr. Murad was formely from KBOI and Boise’s Treasure Valley.  And his landing seemed to kick off a fresh look and feel for KOIN’s morning news, including a new and snappy ad campaign that included Meteorologist Sally Showman, Anchor Jenny Hansson, Traffic’s Carly Kennelly and Murad, all getting along swimmingly in front of a new set and behind new graphics.

Fast forward to last week, and a Twitter post (see above) where Mr. Murad is suddenly unemployed.  And he has to be gracious about it because he’s probably looking for work in another market and he doesn’t want to look like a bad sport to a future employer.  He simply says “Management said they wanted to go in another direction.”

Again?  This is the kind of thing that can make a viewer wonder exactly who is driving the train, or car, or clown car.  You know he was vetted.  You know he was focused grouped to death.  You know they spent a lot of money believing he was money, baby.  And now, he and Mr. Carter share a pitiful truth about the broadcasting business.  It quite possibly doesn’t know what it’s doing.

And just like before, I wonder how the staff is weathering the change. This is hard shit.  For months, we were fed that happy, cheerful spot of the four of them seemingly loving each other’s company as a way of convincing us we would too.  But I wonder if this is just another reason for people at the station to worry about their own jobs and, like Madame Secretary, know they better just hold it in and keep going.

While the station possibly looks for a new face, long time local rock of a reporter, Ken Boddie, is joining Jenny Hansson at the anchor desk.  Seeing these two pros side by side makes me marvel that anybody ever gets to stay long enough to become a pro.  And seeing Mr. Boddie in Murad’s old seat tells me KOIN management didn’t have anyone warming up in the bullpen which makes me think this departure was sudden rather than the previous one which seemed more planned.

Just as an aside, Mr. Murad’s tweet is dated March 16th, which was a Monday.  I first noticed something was wrong after I started counting the number of vacation days he probably had that I though he had certainly used up by now.  So, he’s been off the air at least two weeks.  If industry norms prevail, he was probably let go on a Friday.  And that tweet is from his own account because according to Twitter, his KOIN twitter account, @MikeKOIN, doesn’t exist anymore.  It was almost certainly and immediately deactivated.

Nice.  Real nice.

  1. Does KOIN shutting down their comment board have anything to do with the current debacle?

    • Good digging, Heidi. My guess is that each time a new anchor is hired, the comment section is wide open, but whenever somebody is hustled out quietly, comments are shut down. Thin skinned.

  2. I am truly disgusted with KOIN! They used to be my favorite station in Portland, but I do not like any of the changes the past year. First, they remove one of the best anchors, Kelli Day, who had the Portland spirit just like the anchors of KGW and KATU. Most of the new anchors, except for Jennifer Hoff, are boring and lack any type of true spirit to bring life to the newscast. The management needs to look at the whole picture before making any more stupid moves! They think with their emotions not with a way to bring the news to the public that isn’t all glitzy and stretching the truth!

  3. I use to watch KOIN because of Jeff and Kelli and the weather news from Bruce Sussman was like no other. I don’t know what direction they feel they need to go to but it is terrible. Everytime I hear we are working for you I just crinch who came up with that dumb saying. I guess I’ll give channel 2 a try. My favorite is still channel 8 and channel six will never be able to top them. Jeff and Carly are the only personable people on your network

  4. I emailed KOIN this comment:

I am sure you’ve heard many comments like this recently, but YOUR HIRING AND FIRING DECISIONS ARE TERRIBLE! I liked Chad Carter, Bruce Sussman, Kelli Day and had even grown to like Mike Murad, Chad Carter’s replacement, quite a bit. The replacements have been weaker in every case. Now that you’ve eliminated nearly every really good newscaster (and undoubtedly given every remaining newscaster severe anxiety), I suggest you fire Jeff Gianola and be done with it. Just give up…throw in the towel… Or you could fire the fool whose been making these horrible decisions and hire some of the good newscasters back, if they are still willing to work for you.

  5. I’m glad I’m not the only one feeling this way. I switched over to koin from katu for the morning news because I liked the group chemistry. Then Murad was suddenly deleted and now it’s hard to watch. Absent firing for cause, you don’t treat an employee this way.

  6. I was shocked to lose Chad Carter and now I am doubly stunned at losing Mike Murad . They both put so much into their jobs and I looked forward to seeing them in the mornings . How sad for everybody ! KGW creates a more stable atmosphere that we can depend on .

  7. Agreement to above statements. I can’t stand Ken Boddie and I miss Kelly, Mike and Bruce. Jenny Hansen is so full of her self and Ann State is a puppet with Zero personality. I have move on to other broadcast that value people!!!!

  8. Jeff better watch out for the giddy blond empty headed anchor next to him- she wants that camera so bad she my just push him off the set. Is there a word for that?
